Gastric Bypass - Assessing If You Are Eligible
There are mainly three types of gastric bypass surgeries. These surgeries are namely the laparoscopic Roux en Y (RNY), the mini-gastric bypass, and the bilopancreatic diversion. The objective of all these surgeries is to achieve significant weight loss in severely obese individuals in the quickest time possible.
The laparoscopic RNY is the most popular of the three gastric bypass surgeries. In the procedure, the surgeon makes five small incisions in the skin over the stomach. A camera (laparoscope) connected to a video screen display is placed through one of these incisions and the long instruments are inserted through the other. The entire operation is performed while watching the display. RNY entails less scarring, less pain, shorter hospitalization, and quicker recuperation than the other procedures.
However, before you go in for any of them it is important to consider your fitness for a gastric bypass surgery and what to take note before and after.
You would be a candidate for a gastric bypass surgery if you are a male/female whose respective weight is at least 100/80 pounds respectively more than the respective normal weight. The normal weight is available in standard weight tables corresponding to your height and age. In BMI (body mass index) terms, this works out to a minimum of 40 kg-meter per square meter for men and 35 kg-meter per square meter for women. Every obese individual does not fall in the above category. At the same time, there may be certain individuals who are much too obese to be considered fit candidates by doctors. Together with the above main criterion, there are certain other additional criteria for a candidate to be considered fit for medical gastric bypass surgery. These criteria include co-morbidity. This term means that you have a morbid (life-shortening) illness such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or heart disease. Weight gain has a life-reducing effect on the progression of these diseases. So, by reducing your weight through the gastric bypass surgical procedure, you can help prolong your life. This is the main reason why this criterion is included. Another important condition is that you need to have been obese at least for the last 3 to 5 years. Further, you must have attempted to lose weight for the last two years. Other important conditions include your capability of self-care and diligently following doctor's instructions. They also include your self-motivation towards losing weight and a healthy lifestyle. Not being involved in smoking, drug abuse, and drinking alcohol are also conditions. Finally, you need to be an adult under the age of 65 years. The reason why these additional conditions are imposed is that unless you have a demonstrated willpower and commitment towards weight loss, your brain will not strive to do so after surgery. Moreover, smoking, drug abuse, and alcoholism tend to increase weight. They also reduce your willpower and commitment towards weight loss. Finally, the trauma of the surgery already weakens your body mechanism, and especially in old persons, it makes your mental and physical condition difficult. This also happens due to the complications and side effects of medical gastric bypass surgery. Such complications can include cataracts in old people as a result of nutritional deficiencies.
